Preparations

Unpack the phone and ensure all components are present: base unit, corded handset, handset cord, cordless handset, handset charger, base AC power adapter, telephone line cord, belt clip, owner's manual, battery pack. Install the battery pack in the cordless handset and charge for 12 hours before first use. Place base away from water, heat sources, and interference. Use wall mounting bracket if desired.

Description

The VTech 2498 is a 2.4GHz DSS cordless phone with digital answering system (up to 99 messages). Features include backlit display, speakerphone, adjustable ringer, 50-name phonebook, caller ID log (90 entries), redial, call transfer, conference calls, mute, quiet mode, voicemail waiting indicator, and intercom. Supports English, Spanish. Handset and base layouts include navigation keys, volume controls, dedicated buttons for mute, redial, find handset, INTERCOM.

Applications: Residential cordless telephony; Compatible with DSL/Caller ID; Up to 4 handsets.

Precautions

CAUTION! To prevent electrical shock/equipment damage, unplug before cleaning. Use damp cloth; no liquids or aerosol cleaners.

WARNING! Do not use near water; avoid unstable surfaces; ensure ventilation; use specified power source; do not overload outlets; unplug if damaged or exposed to rain. Avoid disassembly; contact service. Do not use during electrical storms.

Specifications

Removing Old Phone

Shut off power if applicable. Remove old phone cover. Label wires before disconnecting. Disconnect wires one at a time; do not let fall into wall. Remove old base from wall.

Installation

Plug AC power adapter into electrical outlet and DC connector into base. Connect handset charger power supply to outlet. Connect coiled handset cord to base. Insert battery pack in handset compartment, replace cover, place handset in charger for 12 hours. Connect telephone line cord to base and wall jack. Check for dial tone: Press PHONE on handset or pick up corded handset on base. Set dial mode if needed (preset to tone). For wall mounting: Release bracket, turn down, snap into holders; rotate hook 180 degrees; route cords, mount on wall plate.

Wiring Diagrams

Terminal Designations: RJ11 jack for line cord on base; DC jack for power adapter.

Standard Setup: Wall jack to base RJ11; Power outlet to adapter to base DC jack.

Wall Mount: Route cords through bracket slots.

CAUTION! All wiring must conform to local/national electrical codes. Do not use switched outlets.

Check Operation

After charging, lift handset and listen for dial tone. Test by dialing a number and adjusting volume. Verify CHARGE light on base.

Basic Calling

  1. Press PHONE/FLASH, enter number.
  2. To answer: Press PHONE/FLASH or any dialing key.
  3. Adjust volume with VOL+/-.
  4. End call: Press OFF/CLEAR or place in base.

Answering Machine

  1. Press ANS ON/OFF on base to turn on.
  2. Record greeting: Press PROG on base, select RECORD GREETING, speak after beep, press 5 to stop.
  3. Test by calling from another phone; messages record automatically.

Intercom

  1. Press INTERCOM on handset to page base.
  2. Answer at base: Press INTERCOM.
  3. Transfer call: Press INTERCOM during call.

Caller ID

View by pressing CID/; new calls with icon. Dial back by pressing PHONE/FLASH. Save to directory by pressing STORE.

Operating Features

Programming

Access menu with PROG/CHAN on handset or PROG on base. Set date/time, program phonebook, configure ringer.

  1. Set Time: Press PROG/CHAN, scroll to DATE/TIME, press SELECT, enter month/day/hour/minute/AMPM, press SELECT.
  2. Phonebook Entries: Press PROG/CHAN, scroll to DIRECTORY, press SELECT, STORE, enter name/number, press SELECT.
  3. Run: Exit menu; changes activate immediately.

Configuration

Enter menu via PROG/CHAN. Adjust LCD language, key tone, ringer volume/tone, voicemail number, quiet mode.
